Elements of Treatment at Talbott Recovery

Our program was developed in part by a doctor with addiction, so we understand the unique challenges you are facing. Through decades of experience, we have established substance use treatment fundamentals that consistently lead to lasting sobriety.

Elements of addiction recovery include:

Assessment

We perform a thorough assessment using a holistic approach. Staff consider your psychiatric, psychological, social and family needs to coordinate the treatments that are right for you.

Our assessment coordinator manages the details so you have a seamless experience. You undergo evaluations from:

  • Addiction medicine specialists
  • Internal medicine doctors
  • Psychiatrists
  • Psychologists

With your permission, we may also speak with loved ones or your local healthcare providers. These confidential conversations help us learn about other aspects of your life and health that impact recovery.

72-hour comprehensive assessment

Talbott Recovery pioneered the 72-hour assessment framework for licensed professionals. This in-depth evaluation helps determine whether addiction and a co-occurring mental illness affect your ability to carry out professional duties. You may need this assessment if your referring entity (such as an employer, professional board or licensing agency) requests it.

Our 72-hour assessments include:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Addiction medicine assessments
  • Drug screening and other lab tests
  • Psychological testing
  • Self-assessment of biological, psychological and social factors

Treatment planning

Treatment at Talbott Recovery includes in-depth reflection on the causes of addiction and your motivation for recovery. We then use a variety of techniques, including individual and group therapy, to help you forge a path toward lasting sobriety. Each treatment element helps you gain the skills, knowledge and confidence necessary for a substance-free life.

Medically assisted detoxification and stabilization

After quitting drugs or alcohol, your body naturally eliminates toxins (detoxification). Depending on the substance, this process sometimes causes severe physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms.

Medically assisted detoxification is available through our sister facility, Black Bear Lodge. This process helps make withdrawal easier to manage. You receive around-the-clock medication and support to help ease symptoms. This phase of recovery lasts until detoxification is complete, at which point you return to Talbott Recovery.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PHP is for people with severe addiction requiring a higher level of care. You undergo focused treatment six hours a day, five days a week. Care involves individual and group counseling, education about recovery skills, medications (if necessary) and family therapy. Learn more about our partial hospitalization program (PHP).

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

This program includes the same types of treatment as partial hospitalization, but for three hours a day, five days a week. IOP may be the next step after completing PHP. Or you may begin your recovery in our IOP program. Explore our intensive outpatient treatment program (IOP).

Dual Diagnosis Program

We provide specialized treatment for people with addiction and a co-occurring mental illness, such as anxiety and bipolar disorder. Our integrated approach treats both types of conditions to support comprehensive recovery. Find out more about our dual diagnosis program.

Mirror Image Program

People with addiction can often recognize the effects of addiction in others but not themselves. The Mirror Image program aims to help people overcome this “myopia” (nearsightedness) related to addiction. It enables you to recognize the effects of addiction in others and draw parallels to your own life. This process fosters self-awareness and promotes personal insight.

Continuing care

As discharge approaches, continuing care coordinators help you prepare for the next stage of treatment. We may recommend a local PHP or IOP program and help find one that meets your needs. Coordinators also help you find a psychiatrist and therapist near home.

We provide a detailed aftercare plan enabling your new providers to pick up where we left off. Staff work closely with employers, professional boards or licensing agencies to ensure ongoing monitoring and reporting. We explain these requirements to you and answer any questions you may have.

Return visits

After completing treatment, return visits enable you to reconnect with staff and fellow patients. These weekend workshops help refresh your knowledge and commitment to recovery. We address any ongoing needs you may have. Return visits are one of the many ways we support program graduates. Read more about alumni support services.
