Medical Director’s Message

Navjyot Singh Bedi, M.D. Medical Director

Greetings from Talbott Recovery Campus.  As current professionals referral sources or prospective referents to Talbott Recovery Campus, you are very familiar with the high quality and chemical dependence treatment we strive to provide.

I would like to describe some of the enhancements introduced to our tried and  tested chemical dependency treatment program.  We continue to have a rich and vibrant experience for our Professionals Program at Talbott Recovery Campus which includes our Campus Phase and the Mirror Image Phase of treatment.  But in response to the identified needs of the populations we serve, we have put together several key enhancements to better target and meet the needs of our patients.

As you are well aware, the professionals’ program patient population presents with its own unique set of challenges.  We are seeing increasing complexity of psychiatric, emotional and personality related variables in these patients.  I am proud to state that Talbott Recovery Campus now has 4 full-time addiction psychiatrists.  This allows us to address,  identify and treat an increasingly complex set of co-occurring psychiatric, emotional and personality related variables in our patients.

Trauma is often significant to the development of addiction and certainly, successful treatment for trauma is a key component in relapse prevention.  This becomes an even more prominent issue in our female physician population who carry a disproportionate burden of shame and guilt.  Talbott offers specialty groups for those individuals dealing with trauma issues in our Trauma Recovery Track. With this addition, we hope to address this often under recognized and certainly undertreated variable in our patients.

We have also taken great steps to identify and recognize the important and unique needs of patients with trans-cultural and cross-cultural issues. A fourth of our physician population in the United States was not born or trained in the United States.  This often leads to various barriers to lasting recovery including shame, guilt, underutilization of services and difficulty with traditional and more 12-Step facilitated forms of treatment.  With our additional emphasize on cross-cultural issues and family of origin issues, we further hope to address and enhance services to this important sub group.

And then there is this issue of personality traits in our patients.  Obsessive compulsive, narcissistic, avoidant and passive aggressive personality are over represented in our patient population.  Our patients have a dense blind spot to the manner in which their fixed ways of thinking, behaving and dealing with real life situations interacts with their addiction and impacts their lives in many different ways.  We have introduced the New Path Group which specifically examines, in a group setting, the interaction between the unique personality variables of an individual and the addiction and consequences that surround them. By looking at their personality traits, and the consequences and ramifications of these traits on their life choices in general, provides a medium of self analysis that we find vital to their acceptance of the disease of addiction. This is also very helpful in relapse prevention skills.

As you can see, we continue to provide a high degree of care to our patients but take additional care to individualize their care based on the unique needs of each patient.

Please feel free to call me should you have any questions on any of the enhancements I have described.  I will be delighted to discuss them in greater detail with you. I can be reached at (678) 251-3247.

Sincerely,

Navjyot S. Bedi, MD, Medical Director
