Chip Abernathy, LPC
Professionals Program Coordinator
A Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Relapse Prevention Specialist (Gorski-CENAPS), Chip Abernathy joined the Talbott Recovery staff in October 2017. He earned a BA in applied behavioral sciences from National-Louis University and an MA in psychology from Georgia School of Professional Psychology. Born in Marietta, Georgia, and raised in Atlanta, Abernathy has worked full-time in the treatment of addiction and co-occurring disorders since 1984. Previous work experience includes serving as program coordinator of recovering professionals services at Ridgeview Institute, and as a consultant on addiction treatment in both the private and public sectors. He also maintains a private counseling/psychotherapy practice.
His own recovery experience played a large role in wanting to help others find what was given to him, and he says, “I feel that helping people with addiction and mental health problems find recovery is a sacred honor.” When asked what he loves about working at Talbott, he replies, “Great staff, wonderful patients, healthy atmosphere of recovery; we have it all!” He adds, “Being a part of something that is so spiritually right, and the great people I get to do it with … I look forward to coming to work every day.”
Married with two adult children, Abernathy enjoys playing guitar and sings professionally and for fun. He’s also been studying and practicing Asian martial arts for over 25 years.
