Al-Anon/Alateen is a 12-Step Program available to individuals who have a family member or friend struggling with the disease of alcoholism. Al-Anon is based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and is free and confidential support for families and friends of the alcoholic. Living with alcoholism has been described as living on a merry go-round, where each family member plays a role with the alcoholic in their lives. These behavior patterns are like the script of a play, repeated over and over, centering on the alcoholic.
Al-Anon meetings are held at Talbott to help family members lead healthier lives as well as to help them deal with their family member who is recovering from addiction. This service at Talbott is separate from our addiction family therapy program but is a recommended support step for family members who are experiencing pain due to the struggle their loved one is undergoing as they deal with substance abuse issues.
By attending Al-Anon, family members can gain understanding of the disease of alcoholism, how it has affected them while learning a new role. Changing one’s behavior can be uncomfortable and very difficult to do, but Al-Anon members learn that they have to take responsibility for themselves and their own recovery. For more information about Al-Anon/Alateen call 1-888-4-AL-ANON (weekdays, 8am to 6pm ET) or visit the Web Site at www.al-anon.alateen.org.
For the Al-Anon meetings in your community, select your favorite web browser (Yahoo, Google, etc.) and type: Al-Anon, “your city,” “your state.” For example: Al-Anon, Atlanta, GA. If there is one available, it should be in first ten listings. Services are generally held in alcohol rehab centers, libraries, churches & synagogues, and other public settings.
Also available for support is Nar-Anon, a Twelve Step fellowship for the family and friends of the narcotic addicts. For more information about Nar-Anon call 1-800-477-6291 or visit the website: https://nar-anon.org/Nar-Anon/Nar-Anon_Groups.html.
